Baldwin, dei gratia Latinitatis Ierosolimorum rex secundus, confirms for his relation [consanguineus] Gelduinus, abbot-elect of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, the gifts made by the barones of the kingdom and by King Baldwin I as follows. Lambertus gave a casale called Soesme, situated over the river [Jordan] which is popularly called the river of the Devil, with the consent of Goscelinus princeps Tyberiadis and Willelmus de Buris, who gave the casale to Lambertus. Barianus constabularius Ioppe gave lands and vineyards in the territory of Jerusalem. Wido de Miliaco made an eleemosynary gift on his behalf and that of his wife Helisabet of lands and vineyards in the territory of Jerusalem. Radulfus Aliensis gave land situated next to Mons Gaudii and a house with a garden in Jerusalem. King Baldwin I of Jerusalem gave 4 carruchae of arable land in the territory of Jaffa and an oven, a mill and houses, lands and vines at Beirut and 2 carruchae of land just outside [in suburbio] Acre. Eustachius Granerius gave a casale called Capharabra/Cafarabra in the territory of Sidon and a house in Sidon, and close to [in confinio] Caesarea a casale called Bethalla, and a house in Caesarea. Balduinus de Ramis gave 2 aratra of land in the territory of Rama. Rogerius de Roseht gave a villanus with all his possessions on Mons Betericus, with the agreement of the aforesaid Barianus. Goscelinus princeps Tyberiadis gave a casale called Cafrielme and 2 rustici with all their possessions in the territory of Tiberias. Ado de Cheresio, his wife Richoldis and his son Warmundus gave a casale called Lichorat/Lychorat. Rogerius Ramatensis episcopus gave a casale called Saphoria and a house in his castle [castrum], together with a mahumeria within the walls and outside 4 carruchae of arable land. Teobaldus/Theobaldus de Nigella gave a casale called Zebezeb/Zebezel. Tancred, prince [princeps] of Antioch gave a casale called Tymini, situated on the slopes of Mt Carmel, and in the castle of Haifa a platea in which a church has been built, and houses, an oven, a mill and lands and trees which are outside the castle. King Baldwin II’s confirmation had been agreed by Patriarch Warmund and the king’s barones during the council of Nablus. With the assent of King Baldwin II and his wife Emma, Hugues comte de Joppe makes a sealed eleemosynary gift to the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, built over the tomb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, represented by Abbot Gelduin, his uncle [patruus]. He gives a third good casale, called Machoz, situated in the territory of Ascalon, in addition to the 2 others he has already given. He also gives: a good mahomeria in the city of Ascalon; a verger outside the city, chosen from among the better ones; a casale inhabited by Samaritans called Saphe in the territory of Nablus; a gastina called Melbena and some land before the gate of Jaffa that previously belonged to Framericus. Hugh’s constable Barisanus gives the abbey, with Hugh’s authorization, the casale of Dargeboam and a third of the gastina of Zonia in the territory of Jerusalem. At the request of Gelduinus abbas and the monks of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, Patriarch Warmund of Jerusalem concedes the tithes of the following casalia which are in the abbey’s possession: in the territory of Jerusalem, 2 parts of the casale of Bethsan, the tithe of the gardens and mills of Syloe, and the tithes of all lands and vineyards belonging to St Mary, except for the tithes of 2 carracutae, of which one belonged to Wido de Miliaco, the other to Balianus Joppensis; in the territory of Nablus the tithes of 2 casalia called Aschar and Betheri; in of the territory of Acre the tithes of the casale of Cassara and 4 carrucatae terre and olive trees belonging to St Mary in the casale of Hubertus de Patci; half the tithes of Balianus at Betheri; a third part of the tithes of Balduinus Ramathensis at the 3 casalia of Gemmail, Assir and Beithbezim; the tithes of Gaufredus de Cavis in the 2 casalia of Mezerech and Dalfin. Warmund confirms all the gifts of tithes that have been made by churchmen or laymen. A record of the obligations the rustici of Heinricus de Alentione who live in Borca owe the monks of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat with respect to the land of Dargiboan. They owe half of the labour in the cultivation of the land, but if the monks of St Mary want to commute the labour for money the rustici of Borca will pay 2 caroubles less than 2 besants. If the rustici do not want to work the land at all they should pay the monks a sum equal to the revenue of a similar estate. If the land is left uncultivated it should pass to the monks for ever.
