text: Dec. 25 1102 – Dec. 24 1103. Raymond, comes Tholosanus vel gratia Dei Tripolitanus, makes an eleemosynary grant [including the prayer that his castle be finished]. He gives the recently built church [constructa ecclesia] in Jerusalem of St Mary of the Latins land lying just outside [in suburbio] the new castle of Mont Pèlerin on which to erect a church in honour of St Mary. He had promised this to Petrus Olivarus before he had gone to Tortosa. The land stretches from the church on the site of the hospitale [the hospital of St John of Jerusalem] as far as the bridge and the river. He hands this over to the monk Stephanus, with the rights to everything a church ought legally to have, including a cemetery, a presbytery and the power to receive oblations. He also gives additional land and a mill that adjoins it, together with the field in which the mill is situated. This land near the church is estimated to equal 2 carrucates [quantum possit sufficere duobus paribus boum ad arandum per singula et opportuna tempora]. He also gives a casale beyond the bridge and he approves all that the monks acquire justly. Confirmed by Raimundus, comes Sancti Egidii; Gelvira, comitissa. text: Sept. 24 1109 - Mar. 24 1110. After an account of the liberation of Jerusalem, the election of Godfrey [karissimus frater meus] to the office of sancte civitatis gubernator and Godfrey’s death primo principatus sui anno peracto, Baldwin, ab exultante clero principibus et populo primus rex Francorum nutu divino electus atque statutus, describes how he was crowned in the church of Bethlehem and announces that he wanted to raise Bethlehem to the status of bishopric. After consulting Arnulfus archidiaconus and the chapter [of the church of the Holy Sepulchre] in Jerusalem, he sent Arnulfus archidiaconus and Aicardus decanus to Rome for advice. Pope Paschal II ordered Archbishop Gibelin of Arles to hear the case presented by Arnulfus and Aicardus and to follow them to Jerusalem. Gibelin, on the orders of Paschal and with the agreement of the chapter of the church of the Holy Sepulchre, chose and installed Aschetinus eiusdem ecclesie cantor, who had already been elected bishop of Ascalon, as bishop of Bethlehem. [21] Ascalon was subjected to Bethlehem. Confirming this, Baldwin, dei gratia rex Ierusalem Latinorum primus, also confirms the eleemosynary gift [to benefit among others the soul of Godfrey misericordissimus dux] he had made to the church of Bethlehem of the villa of Bethlehem and the following casalia: Bedar in the territory of Acre; Seylon in the territory of Nablus; Bethbazan/Bethbezen/Bethlezen next to Bethlehem; Zeophir/Zoephyr and Carcapha/Carchapha/Carapha in the territory of Ascalon. He has solved the disputes Bethlehem had had with the church of Jerusalem through the exchange of lands and vineyards in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem. He threatens judgement on any who should dispute this grant after his death and promises to confirm any gift to Bethlehem made by his magnates, knights and burgesses [optimates, milites, burgenses]. The charter is dated to the period in which Archbishop Gibelin of Arles, the papal legate, was elected to the patriarchate of Jerusalem. text: Jun./Jul. 1109 – Nov. 30 1110. Bertrand, inclitus comes [Tripolitanus], son of Raymond of St Gilles, had made an eleemosynary grant, to benefit the soul of his relation William Jordan [count of Cerdagne], in the presence of King Baldwin I of Jerusalem, the archiepiscopus Albariensis and Arnulfus archidiaconus and other good men. He had made this to the church of the Holy Sepulchre which is situated in the castle [castrum] of Mont Pèlerin and was represented by Johannes, who was prior of the same church. Bertrand had given 3 casalia: Abdin/Addin, Babela/Habela, and Beniharan/Beniaran, but he had unjustly taken the casalia back into his hands. When Arnaldus, elected prior of the church on Mont Pèlerin by the chapter of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, demanded the return of the casalia, Bertrand, together with his son Pontius acknowledged his guilt. By an eleemosynary grant he returns them to the church. He confirms the gifts made to the church of the Holy Sepulchre on Mont Pèlerin by his father, Count Raymond of St Gilles, and his cousin William Jordan and in addition gives Arnaldus prior a good horse and the best mule that can be found. If Bertrand or Pontius fail in this commitment they will be subjected to excommunication by the patriarch of Jerusalem, the bishop of Tripoli, the archbishop of Apamea [Femia] and the bishop of Béziers.
