text: Dec. 31. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to the bishop of Tripoli. He records how he had quashed the translations that the patriarch of Antioch, following the example of his predecessor, who had moved the archbishop of Tarsus [Tarsensis] to the archbishopric of Mamistra [Mamistanum] and the bishop of Valenia, archbishop elect of Apamea, to the diocese of Tripoli. He stresses the canon law, ecclesiology and theology underpinning the papal prerogative, in spite of the protests of the patriarch of Antioch in the name of his church’s ancient status. Now, recognizing the bishop’s worth, which had been vouched for by C[onradus] Maguntinus archiepiscopus, Innocent confirms him in his possession of the church of Tripoli, dispensing him from his previous offices.
