With the assent of King Baldwin II and his wife Emma, Hugues comte de Joppe makes a sealed eleemosynary gift to the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, built over the tomb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, represented by Abbot Gelduin, his uncle [patruus]. He gives a third good casale, called Machoz, situated in the territory of Ascalon, in addition to the 2 others he has already given. He also gives: a good mahomeria in the city of Ascalon; a verger outside the city, chosen from among the better ones; a casale inhabited by Samaritans called Saphe in the territory of Nablus; a gastina called Melbena and some land before the gate of Jaffa that previously belonged to Framericus. Hugh’s constable Barisanus gives the abbey, with Hugh’s authorization, the casale of Dargeboam and a third of the gastina of Zonia in the territory of Jerusalem. Henry, count palatine of Troyes, having visited the church of the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat and in consideration of the holiness of the place and the monks’ devotion, makes a sealed grant, giving the abbey an annual rent of 10 livres, which he will assign on his return from the East. Should he die in the interim, he instructs his wife, son and guardians of his land to fulfil his wishes. He declares that everything the abbey shall acquire will be held freely, with the right to dispose of property should it so wish.
