In the general letter, Vineam Domini Sabaoth, Pope Innocent III addresses the bishops, clergy and laity throughout Christendom, including the archbishops, bishops, abbots and priors in Cyprus and [Cilician] Armenia, the episcopus Maronitanensis, the king of Cyprus and the magistri and brothers of the Knights Templar and the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. He appeals for the recovery of the Holy Land and the reform of Church. He convokes a general council, to be held on 1 November 1215. In the meantime he will be calling on individuals in each province to enquire into what is needed to further the needs of the Holy Land.

He asks John to favour the Premonstratensian brothers of St Samuel now residing in Acre and to restore them to their old abbey once it is recovered.

Gervase asks the patriarch to bear in mind especially the restoration of the possessions of the Premonstratensians, [the abbeys of] Sanctus Samuel and Sanctus Abacuc, the first being a daughter of Prémontré, the second a daughter of Floreffe. They have asked Pope Honorius III for advice. The pope declares that they are not bound by this oath, which would limit their rights to defend their church.

He refers especially to churches of the Holy Sepulchre at Acre, Tyre and Antioch, and those in the Latin empire, southern Italy, Sicily, Iberia, Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, Croatia [Sclavonia], Germany, France, Lombardy, Tuscany and England; and to tenements [tenimenta] at Tripoli and Gibelech, and a casale on Cyprus, together with a possession in Moravia. He confirms liberties acquired before the Fourth Lateran Council; the right to obtain chrism and holy oils from Latin diocesan bishops, or even from others; the ban on any brother leaving the community without licence from the patriarch or the prior; and freedom from the consequences of interdict.
