Sibilia, daughter of King Amalric, Ioppes et Ascalonis comitissa, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant, to benefit particularly her soul and the soul of her husband Guillelmus comes. She gives Rodricus comes and the professed brothers of his Order [Montjoie] the turris puellarum in the city of Ascalon, a garden beside it, and 2 other towers on the walls of the city, situated between the turris puellarum and the church of St Mary, and another tower towards the sea on the other side of the turris puellarum. She also gives an annual rent of 100 besants, payable from the revenues of the city gate in 4 instalments: in the octave of Christmas, at Easter, at the Nativity of St John the Baptist and on the Feast of St Remigius on 1 October. King Baldwin IV confirms the gift made to comes Roderico/Rodriguès of the religio Montis Gaudii or Cisterciensis [Avia in 1 ms] by Raynaud cy-devant prince d’Antioche et seigneur de Montreal et d’Ebron, with the agreement of his wife Estiennete, his [step]children Hunfroy/Honfroi and Isabelle, Guillaume comte d’Ascalon et de Joppé and his wife the comtesse Isabelle [Sibylla], of a great stretch of land with the casalia in it, on condition that if the Order ceases to engage in warfare against the Sarrasins the properties will be returned to their original owners. The king will have the right to part of all booty gained from the infidels, on the same terms as those that apply to the Hospitallers. The charter was drawn up by Lambertus.

text: May 15. Velletri. Pope Alexander III grants privileges and confirmation to Rodericus magister domus sancte Marie Montis Gaudii de Jerusalem and his professed brothers. He takes the Order of Montjoie under papal protection and approves a Rule based on that of the Cistercians, with exceptions for those brothers engaged in warfare. He confirms the following possessions: the locus [on] Mons Gaudii where the house of the Order is situated, outside the walls of Jerusalem; Toanasaba given by King Baldwin III, the Turris Puellarum with 3 other towers and a garden adjacent in the city of Ascalon; 100 besants [aurei] drawn annually from the funda of Ascalon; Palmaria given by Guido de Scandalione; 300 besants [aurei] drawn annually from the logia in Acre where bread is sold; 400 besants [aurei] drawn annually from the Gate of David [in Jerusalem] ; and properties in Iberia. [165] The Order is permitted to build oratories in remote places. It is exempted from much episcopal jurisdiction, although its churches should be subject to local bishops and it should show respect to the abbot of Cîteaux. It is freed from the payment of tithes and first fruits on lands cultivated by the brothers themselves or providing animal fodder or on newly established churches and villae in deserted places. It can admit secular priests and laymen.
