text: Dec. 1-31. Leon, son of Stephen of the powerful family of Rupinids, dei gratia rex Armeniorum, makes a sealed grant to the doge and citizens of Venice, represented by Jacobus Badoarius, the son of the knight Johannes Badoarius, the emissary of the doge, who has a safe-conduct. He gives all Venetians freedom to go and return to his cities, ports and bridges with their merchandise, to buy and sell and export without paying dues [servitium, drictura, angaria et passagia], except when they are permanenly resident in the East and have come from other ports in the Levant, when they will pay as do all Christians, and except when they bring in silver and gold and mint besants or money, in which case they must pay the same dues [drictura] as do those in the territory of Acre. They will be safe if shipwrecked. They will be free to travel by land to any city, Christian or Muslim [Saraceni] with which Leon has a peace or truce agreement. The goods of those who are dying or die will be secure, but if intestate, the goods will be deposited with Johannes Sisensi archiepiscopus, regis Armenie cancellarius, and will be sent to the doge on his request. Disputes among Venetians will be settled by the Venetians themselves, although if they cannot be resolved, they will be treated in the presence of the archbishop. Disputes between a Venetian and a non-Venetian, including those leading to death, will be heard in the curia regalis. Leon makes an eleemosynary grant to the Venetians of a church and provisions for priests and clergy in Mamistra, together with a fundicum, in which they can store their merchandise, and a site for building a house. [275] Bohemond [IV], son of Prince Bohemond, per Dei gratiam princeps Antiochenus et comes Tripolitanus, makes a sealed grant to the commune of Genoa and all Genoese, represented by Lambertus Fornarius and Belmustus Lercarius, the consuls of Genoa. He gives the Genoese freedom to sell, buy, import and export money freely without the payment of duty [sine omni consuetudine et jure peccunie], except to those Genoese who are burgenses of the kingdom of Jerusalem, the county of Tripoli, the principality of Antioch or Cyprus. He gives the Genoese the right to a curia, but cases of homicide, sedition, rape, money, or physical force on a person or his goods ought to be judged in Bohemond’s curia. The Genoese may buy certain houses in Tripoli. The charter is issued on condition that the Genoese will swear to assist Bohemond in the defence of Tripoli should he require such aid. If an individual should refuse to swear such an oath they will be banished from his land. In return for the Genoese servitium of 3000 besants, 2 galeae and 300 men-at-arms, Bohemond, son of Prince Bohemond, per Dei gratiam princeps Antiochenus et comes Tripolitanus, makes a sealed grant to dominus Henricus comes Malte, represented by his faithful servants Albertus Gallina and Armannus vicecomes Henrici and other companions, who are faithful servants of the comes Maute. Bohemond gives the city of Genoa and all Genoese, except for those who are burgenses in the kingdom of Jerusalem, the county of Tripoli, Cyprus and the principality of Antioch, freedom to sell, buy, enter and leave Tripoli with safe-conduct. He gives them a free curia in Tripoli, reserving to his court homicide, rape, sedition and the use of force against a person or his goods or cash. He grants safe-conduct throughout his lands and he confirms all the rights the Genoese had possessed in Antioch in the time of his father Prince Bohemond. text: 1207 - 1208. az-Zahir Ghazi, the sultan of Aleppo, grants to the Venetians, represented by P. Marignuni, the son of J. Marignuni, safe-conduct throughout his territory. The Venetians will pay 12 per cent on the sale of all merchandise and 17 derem on each load [saoma] of cotton [bambasi]. They will pay 5-6 per cent on silver. They are freed from duties on the passage by mons Ceffam. They will have a bath house, fontigo and church in Aleppo and are confirmed in all they have in Latakia. The goods of their dead are safeguarded.

text: Jun. 27. Pope Innocent III confirms Pope Celestine III’s privilege to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He confirms papal protection and the Order’s possessions, specifying: the location in which the Hospital is situated; a house in Ascalon with its vineyards; Zanzi; houses in Ramla; a house, vineyards and possessions at Jaffa; a house in Acre; the casale of Cafirsin; a volta near the Gate of St Nicholas [Acre]; a house in Tyre; a house in Caesarea; the casale called Bezal/Besal; the curia sancti Georgii on Cyprus; 2 villae in Armenia called Combedefort and Heion. The Order is exempted from tithes on noval lands. Sacred oils, consecrations and ordinations can be performed by [any] diocesan bishop. The faithful can be buried in the Order’s cemeteries if they so wish, provided they are not excommunicated or under an interdict. The Order will follow the practice of the Knights Templar with regard to clergy and milites and that of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem with respect to the care of the poor and the sick. There is to be no violence permitted in enclosure. The elections of magistri should be free.

He gives: the casale of Platanistias, situated in the territory of Paphos, with all rights, including villani, chevagii, dimi; the casale called Colos in the territory of Limassol, with all the rights, including villani, chevagii and dimi, that were held by Garinus de Colos, who has willingly surrendered them in exchange for another grant from the king; the prastia Monagrole, situated in the territory of Limassol, with all the land Hardewinus held there and with all rights, including villani, chevagii and dymi. King Hugh makes a further eleemosynary grant, to benefit the soul of his father King Aimery, of a prastia called Finica in the territory of Paphos with all rights, including villani, chevagii and dymi.He grants all the chevagia and dymi of the villani and their heirs in these lands. At the request of frater Guillelmus de Belna, preceptor domus Hospitalis in Cypro, he allows the commandery [domus] of the Hospital in Nicosia, together with the community [domus] of Mora and that of S. Georgius, to grind wheat [bladum] in his mill de la Questria without the payment of dues. He gives the Hospital of St John the houses and plateae that had belonged to Lambita Sabastos and his sister in Limassol. He gives a garden in Limassol, adjoining the houses of Guischon Span and Girardus de Maske and the bath house. He gives the Hospitallers the right to buy and sell their goods throughout Cyprus without the payment of dues. He incorporates the charter from Bohemond.
