text: Feb. 1-28. At Vadum Jacob. In response to an admonition from Pope Alexander III, Odo Sancti Amancii magister milicie Templi and Rotgerius de Molinis minister Hospitalis Iherusalem, with the advice and agreement of their chapters, resolve disputes between the Temple and the Hospital over moveables and immoveables on this side and beyond the sea. The Templar complaints involve: Cratum; misbehaviour at Mons Ferrantus; looting from Beduini of the Templars perpetrated by turcopoli from Gibelinum; the terra Marriciorum, where it has been agreed that commertium should be divided between the Temple and the Hospital, according to the rights the Hospitallers ought to have; the 3 casalia of Terra Galifa, Banna and casale Bertrandimir, of which Terra Galifa and Banna will remain in Hospitaller hands and casale Bertrandimir will remain in Templar possession. The Hospitaller complaints involve: Gaza; Castellum Arnaldi; Aman; and the commandery [domus] at Barletta, all of which are dismissed. The pope’s advice was that if any dispute should arise in future it should be resolved by a panel consisting of 3 brothers from each side. The masters agree that in such cases commanders from each side, of either commanderies or provinces, should enlist 2 of the more discreet brothers to arbitrate. If these are unsuccessful, friendly outsiders should be recruited and a decision taken by majority vote. In the last resort the details of the dispute should be submitted in writing to the masters for resolution. Brothers who refuse to abide by this should summoned to face the master and chapter in Jerusalem. The agreement is reached in the presence of domnus Balduinus sancte civitatis Iherusalem rex Latinorum sextus, domnus Boumundus Antiochenus princeps and domnus Raimundus, comes Tripolitanus, who append their seals; and of domnus Aldebertus comes Marche; domnus Joicilinus regius senescalcus; domnus Balianus; domnus Rainaldus Sydoni-ensis; domnus Humfredus regius comestabulus; domnus Balduinus Ramatensis; and other barones of eastern Christendom.

text: Dec. 15. Lateran. Pope Innocent III orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the archbishop of Tyre and the bishop of Acre to release the Knights Templar from a sentence of excommunication improperly imposed on them by the bishop of Sidon. The bishop of Tiberias had complained that the magister and brothers of the militia Templi had held back 1300 besants and other goods of his diocese, which his predecessor had deposited with them. The pope had appointed the bishops of Sidon and Biblium as judge delegates in the case, but the Templars had sent some brothers to inform him that when they disembarked on a Wednesday at Tyre, having returned from the principality of Antioch where they had been involved in a war between the prince of Antioch and the [Muslim] lord of Aleppo, the bishop assigned the following day, the Thursday, for a hearing of the case. The magister could not attend but sent 2 brothers, who promised to respond to the complaint of the bishop of Tiberias and to observe any sentence delivered by the bishop of Sidon, even though the bishop of Biblium was absent. But the bishop of Sidon refused to hear any arguments and demanded the return of the besants to the bishop of Tiberias by the following Sunday; otherwise he would excommunicate all the Templars, in the West as well as in the East. The 2 brothers hurried to Acre and the magister appealed to the patriarch to settle the case and avoid scandal. But on the following Sunday the bishop of Sidon solemnly and publicly excommunicated the whole Order in the church of the Holy Cross in Tyre. The pope orders the patriarch to look into the matter and, if the bishop of Sidon is guilty, to suspend him from office until the papacy lifts the suspension and to absolve the Knights Templar.

text: Sept.- Oct. Leon, per Dei et R. imperatoris gratiam rex Armeniorum, complains to Pope Innocent III about Cardinal Peter of St Marcellus. With the catholicos, his barones and many noble crusaders [peregrini], Leon had received the cardinal, who had come as papal legate to bring peace between his nephew and the count of Tripoli, the usurper of the principality of Antioch. After the catholicos had repeated his promises as a primate with respect to the Holy See, the discussion turned, in the absence of Cardinal Soffred who was in Acre, to the dispute over Antioch. Leon appealed to Cardinal Peter as legate, citing as witnesses the patriarch of Antioch, the Hospitallers of St John, the Knights Templar and the religious of Nigra Montana. But he discovered that Cardinal Peter had made a private arrangement with the count of Tripoli, the Templars and the citizens of Antioch. Leon went to Antioch to treat for peace, but the count of Tripoli failed to attend the meeting. Before the cardinal’s arrival, Leon and his forces had entered Antioch by force on the eve of the start of Advent, but the patriarch of Antioch intervened and the Templars, who were alllied to the count of Tripoli and the sultan of Aleppo, raising their vexillum Balzanum, had fortified the city towers and had attacked the Armenian forces in and outside the city. Leon had responded by confiscating all Templar possessions in his kingdom. Cardinal Peter ordered him to restore the Templar properties, but Leon demanded the Templars withdraw their opposition to his nephew. Without the agreement of Cardinal Soffred, Peter then summoned a council and imposed an interdict on Cilician Armenia. The catholicos J. and his suffragans refused to enforce this, on the grounds that the catholicos had not been involved, and appealed to the Holy See. At the demand of the cardinals, King Aimery of Jerusalem and Cyprus and all the noble crusaders [peregrini], Leon sent his relation Constantius de Camardesio to Acre in September to negotiate peace with the Templars. Leon asks Pope Innocent to order the Templars to cease their hostility. The Hospitallers and other religious are not hostile.

text: Mar. 5. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate. He approves the election by the canons of the church of Antioch and the translation to the patriarchate of Antioch of the bishop of Ivrea that resulted from the patriarch of Jerusalem’s mediation. He wishes the patriarch of Jerusalem to confer on the new patriarch the insignia of his office as soon as possible and he expects the two patriarchs to work together in the interests of the Holy Land. Turning to the conflict between the king of Armenia, the Knights Templar and the count of Tripoli, he orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to work for reconciliation and to insist on the observance of truces, given the danger to the Holy Land, while persuading the king to restore the Templar properties. With the ending of the dispute between Duke Philip of Swabia and Otto [of Brunswick], who has gained the [western] empire, he hopes assistance will come. Meanwhile he is sending a large sum of money, to be spent on the needs of the Holy Land by the patriarch, the Knights Templar and the Hospitallers of St John.
