text: Feb. 4. Jerusalem. Amalric, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex quintus, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the leprosary of St Lazarus of Jerusalem and its sick. He confirms a rent of 72 besants, taken from the royal revenues from David Gate and payable in 4 instalments of 18 besants each at Easter, the Nativity of St John the Baptist, Michaelmas and Christmas. The rent is made up in the following way. The king has given 50 of these besants for the maintenance of one leper in perpetuity. Added to this is a rent of 10 besants, drawn from the money fief [assisia] attached to the pincernatus, which was given by Odo de Sancto Amando, and a rent of 12 besants was given by the king in exchange for a house next to the macellum in Jerusalem, which the brothers of St Lazarus surrendered to him. text: Beginning of May - mid Jul. Jerusalem. Henricus Bawarie et Saxonie dux makes an eleemosynary grant for the remission of his sins and those of, among others, his wife Mathilda of England. He establishes 3 lamps [lampades] to burn perpetually in the church of the Holy Sepulchre: one in the Holy Sepulchre itself, one in the Calvary chapel, and the third before the relic of the True Cross. He provides these lamps with an endowment to cover the purchase of oil, by buying, with the agreement of King Amalric, the houses of Michael Furbitor next to the wall of the church of the Holy Sepulchre for 500 besants. These will return rents [censuales] of 20 besants a year. Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem, who seals this gift, approves it. He and his convent have promised to buy the oil to keep the lamps alight. In the [burgess] curia of King Amalric, Hodeardis, widow of Oto de Verduno, with the agreement of her sons Henricus and Guido and her daughters Isabella, the wife of Iohannes Aschetinus, and Benedicta, the wife of Ioffridus filius Simonis iudicis, and also Iasza, the wife of Henricus Balistarius, makes a sale, masked as an eleemosynary grant, of a curtile to magister Iosbertus, the poor and the brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The curtile is situated between the public way that leads to Bethlehem and the way that leads to Acheldamach, the lacus Germani and a garden of the Hospital. In return the Hospital gives Hodeardis 760 besants out of charity and receives the whole family into confraternity. Amalric, sancte civitatis Ierhusalem Francorum rex quintus, with the advice and agreement of all his [burgess] court [curia], makes an eleemosynary grant to both the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and the abbey of St Mary Major, confirming that he has given them the street [via] that runs between their houses. The entry to the street in the north is from the ruha palmariorum, facing the church of the Holy Sepulchre. It runs between the communities and then below houses of the Hospital of St John before exiting in the south in the ruha balneorum patriarche. The rights of the two communities are defined as follows. St Mary possesses the street from its start as far as an arch surrounded by a wall [quendam arcum pariete clausum]. The abbey can build houses, as long as they are not higher than the foot of signs of the cross which are inscribed on the walls of the Hospital of St John. From the arch there is a space between the church of the Hospital and the houses of the nuns of St Mary which is to remain empty, with no building permitted. The nuns may not construct doorways or windows there. From the space down to the ruha balneorum patriarche the street is to be the property of the Hospital of St John, which can do whatever it likes in it. The water channels [conducti] are to be managed by both communities in the parts of the street for which they are responsible. The nuns should not engage in work on the wall of the church of the Hospital. She gives the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, represented by Josbertus magister, a turron/mons which in Arabic [Sarracenice] is called Lacomedia, situated between Parrva Palmeria and Tiberias, and all the land on that hill as far as the shoreline of Sea of Galilee, together with the water as far from the land as can be reached by throwing a small stone, weighing the equivalent of 20 besants. The gift includes springs in the land and fisheries and the right to construct mills and whatever the Hospitallers want. Excluded from the gift is land worked by Suliani.
