Pope Gregory IX has heard that the baptism of slaves is being refused in the Latin East, because it is said that many pretend to want to be converted to Christianity and, having gained their liberty, abscond. He demands the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate, all the prelates in Syria, the magister and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, the magister and brothers of the Knights Templar and the preceptor and brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans to allow slaves who sincerely desire to convert to Christianity to be baptised.
