text: Jul. 14. Rieti. The bishop of Limassol has informed Pope Gregory IX that in the churches of Cyprus there is very little for treasurers [thesaurarii] to do and has asked that when a vacancy occurs a treasurer, who enjoys 1 and a half prebends, should be replaced by 2 canons, who would each have a full prebend, thus increasing the number of those serving the church. The pope orders the archbishop of Nicosia to authorize this, provided the chapter of the church of Limassol agrees.

Pope Gregory IX writes to the barones of the kingdom of Jerusalem and the citizens of Acre, the archbishop of Ravenna, the magistri of the Knights Templar and the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, the preceptor of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans and all the clergy in the kingdom of Jerusalem. Concerned for the safety of the Holy Land and after consulting the patriarchs of Constantinople, Antioch and Jerusalem and many other prelates, who were visiting the Holy See, and in the presence of Frederick, Romanorum imperator semper augustus, Ierusalem et Sicilie rex, he is sending the archbishop of Ravenna as papal legate to the East to enforce the peace between the emperor and the barones of Jerusalem and citizens of Acre negotiated by the patriarch of Antioch and the magister of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He demands that the peace be observed and that the discord between the marescallus of the emperor and the barones and citizens cease.

text: Jul. 28. Perugia. Repeating that he is delivering ‘wiser advice’, Pope Gregory IX reprimands Iohannes de Ibelino, pointing out that he has waited a long time for action from Iohannes, who has behaved in the opposite fashion, provoking the emperor Frederick, seducing the people of Acre from his lordship and encouraging them to besiege Tyre. This damages the Holy Land and injures the pope as well as the emperor. Since he does not want Syria to be shaken by war induced by Iohannes, the pope is writing to the decanus Antiochenus, who is the vicarius of the patriarch, ordering him to compel Iohannes to refrain from challenging the emperor’s rights and seizing his lands. Pope Gregory writes similar letters to the decanus Antiochenus and the people of Acre.

text: Sept. 22? [352] Assisi? After narrating the history of the discord between the emperor Frederick and citizens of Acre, the visit of the archbishop of Ravenna, and the mediation of the patriarch of Antioch and the magister of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, and the excommunication of the citizens imposed by the archbishop of Ravenna, Pope Gregory IX refers to the presence of negotiators on behalf of both the emperor and the citizens of Acre. He is minded to relax the sentence of excommunication and suggests to Frederick that the Holy Land be returned to the state it was in before discord arose between Ricc. Filanger. marescalcus imperatoris and the nobles and barones of the kingdom and the citizens [cives] of Acre, that the cives et sindici Acconenses obey the balivi appointed for the time being by Frederick and his son C. in the maintaining of fortifications, the collection of rents and all customary rights, saving the assises [ascisii] and ancient and approved customs [consuetudines], that they and the nobles dissolve the commune [regni communia], take down the bell and remove the consules and capitanei who had been appointed after the dispute arose, abjuring all oaths made prejudicial to Frederick and Conradus and returning to their fealty. R. marescalcus imperatoris should be restored to the honour of the office of baiulus, but a new baiulus, who is above suspicion, should be appointed by the pope himself before next 1 March. Because there is so much animosity felt towards R. marescalcus, other bauli should administer the kingdom in the interim. Because the kingdom of Cyprus remains disturbed and aid to the Holy Land is hindered, the pope asks the emperor to allow him to mediate, so that the king of Cyprus be reconciled to the emperor or truces can be established.
