With the agreement of his wife domna Ysabella regis Amalrici filia, Aimery, per dei gratiam rex Ierusalem nonus et rex Cipri, records under seal that he has sold the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans a casale in the region of Acre called Aguille with its villani and gastinae for 3000 Saracen besants. He adds the following gifts: the right to take a rotula of sugar each day from the sugar press [masarium] in his casale called Fiergio for the needs of the sick in the hospital; in Casale Vmberti and his other casalia in the region of Acre the right to take each year 1 clicha of wheat and 1 clicha of barley from every worked carruca, to be provided by the rustici; 5 carrublae paid by the rustici for every 100 goats wintering in Aimery’s land, and 2 out of the 10 carrublae which Aimery levies for every 10 goats; 3 karrublae provided by the rustici for every carrucata owing Aimery 2 besants. Aimery confirms the eleemosynary gifts and old freedom [francisia] granted to the hospital in Cyprus by King Amalric. Aimery, dei gratia rex Ierusalem nonus et rex Cipri, records that Paulus and his brother, the sons of Theodericus de Sarepta, came into his presence and that of his curia and also of the curia of his iurati, and renounced their claims to a house with a garden in Tyre, which the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans had been given in a charter by comes Henricus and his wife domna Isabella, regis Amalrici filia. At Aimery’s request the brothers of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans give Paulus and his brother 200 besants. With the agreement of his wife the Lady Queen Isabella, Aimery confirms under seal the brothers and the sick of St Mary of the Germans in possession of the house and garden. text: Jun. 27. Pope Innocent III confirms Pope Celestine III’s privilege to the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans. He confirms papal protection and the Order’s possessions, specifying: the location in which the Hospital is situated; a house in Ascalon with its vineyards; Zanzi; houses in Ramla; a house, vineyards and possessions at Jaffa; a house in Acre; the casale of Cafirsin; a volta near the Gate of St Nicholas [Acre]; a house in Tyre; a house in Caesarea; the casale called Bezal/Besal; the curia sancti Georgii on Cyprus; 2 villae in Armenia called Combedefort and Heion. The Order is exempted from tithes on noval lands. Sacred oils, consecrations and ordinations can be performed by [any] diocesan bishop. The faithful can be buried in the Order’s cemeteries if they so wish, provided they are not excommunicated or under an interdict. The Order will follow the practice of the Knights Templar with regard to clergy and milites and that of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem with respect to the care of the poor and the sick. There is to be no violence permitted in enclosure. The elections of magistri should be free.
