text: May 18. Lateran. Pope Innocent III reminds the papal legate, the patriarch of Jerusalem, that he had already ordered him to judge in the dispute between the king of Cilician Armenia and the Knights Templar over the castle of Gaston and other issues. The Templars were prepared to submit to judgement, but the king had refused to accept their approach and had occupied by force their property in portus Bonellus and in other places in Armenia, which provided them with much of their sustenance, installing guards [custodes] in their houses. The patriarch had ordered the king to withdraw his guards and had excommunicated him, warning the inhabitants of, and pilgrims to, the Latin East to do nothing to assist him. The king then seized all the Templar possessions in Cilician Armenia, except for 2 castles which he could not occupy, and destroyed Templar casalia in the principality of Antioch to deprive their castles of provisions. Knights Templar and their companions had been wounded and killed. Innocent is writing to the patriarch of Antioch, the archbishop of Tyre and the bishops of Sidon, Tripoli, Tortosa [Anteradensis], Limassol and Famagusta, and King John of Jerusalem, confirming the excommunication of the king of Cilician Armenia and ordering them to publicize it.

text: Mar. 15-22. Lateran. Pope Innocent records that the patriarch of Jerusalem has informed him that, after the bishop of Sidon had left the Holy Land for the Holy See, a letter had arrived from the king of Cilician Armenia offering immediate peace with the Knights Templar, humbly begging for absolution from his excommunication and asking for justice in his case and that of his nephew against the count of Tripoli. Meanwhile the count of Tripoli had argued that as he held Antioch from the emperor of Constantinople he was exempt from patriarchal jurisdiction. The pope orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to absolve the king from his excommunication, but to deny him and his nephew justice in their dispute with the count of Tripoli for the time being, because of his grave offences. As for the count of Tripoli, his argument that he is subject to the emperor of Constantinople should be dismissed as frivolous and inane.

text: Jan. 10. Lateran. The bishop of Tortosa [Anteradensis episcopus] has complained to Pope Honorius III about the behaviour of the Knights Templar. Lordship of the city of Tortosa is divided between the bishop and the Templars, but the latter, breaking the terms of division laid down a century ago, have ignored the bishop’s lordship [dominium], treating his part as their own, taking control of the city gate that belongs to the church, publicly proclaiming [bannum proclamare] that they have full rights and impeding the operation of the bishop’s meat market [becaria] and the freedom of merchants to sell his grain and wine. They have built 2 new churches in their part of the city, in which they have installed Greek priests [Greci presbyteri] in defiance of the bishop and the Holy See. They have refused to pay their dues, including tithes, to the bishopric, according to the evidence provided by their own rustici Sarraceni, and they have detained tribute paid by [the town of] Coeblum. They have denied the bishop his parochial rights at Castellum Album. The pope gravely rebukes the magister and brothers of the Knights Templar. He orders them to make satisfaction and informs them that he has ordered the archbishops of Tyre and Caesarea and the bishop of Acre to enforce his judgement.

text: Jun. 18. Tyre. In the house of the archbishop of Tyre. Patriarch Albert of Antioch, the papal legate, records under his seal and under those of the magistri of the Orders, his arbitration in a number of disputes between frater Hermannus domus Templi magister and frater Garinus domus Hospitalis sancti Johannis magister, with the agreement of their brothers and under threat of a penalty of 1000 marchae argenti. The patriarch records how agreement was reached in the presence of the magistri, making use of a commission consisting of 3 Knights Templar and 3 brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. (1). The Knights Templar should also enter into the truce which the Hospital of St John has with the sultan of Aleppo in relation to Gabulum. The Knights Templar will receive half of the [revenues] gained as long as the truce lasts, although this will not apply to the lands the Hospital already hold on either side of the River of Belna. These will be respected by the Templars. (2). When the truce ends the Knights Templar should hold Gabulum and its land, paying the Hospital of St John 1100 Saracen besants annually in 2 instalments, at Christmas and on the Feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist. (3). In order to defend Gabulum, the Knights Templar and their men will be free to come and go through the gate the Hospital has in the wall that stretches towards the sea near the port of Margatum, by sea, by the road, which runs between the cistern [barquile] and the ravine [ravina] that extends to the sea, and by all the roads nearby. (4). In relation to a truce made with Saona, neither the brothers of the Hospital nor the Knights Templar are held to assist one another if one of the Orders is at war with Saona. (5). The Hospitallers of St John are held to to assist the Knights Templar with costs when they are at war at Gabulum, as is contained in agreements made between frater Gaufridus de Donzon and frater Philippus de Pleseiç, the late magistri of the Hospital of St John and the Knights Templar. (6). Each Order will observe truces made by the other Order with the Saraceni with respect to Gabulum. (7). Should Gabulum come into Christian hands, this agreement will end and the city and its territories will be divided between the Knights Templar and the Hospital of St John in the proportions held by each before it was lost, in the same terms as was laid down in an arbitration undertaken by the late Cardinal Pelagius of Albano with respect to Maraclea. Witnesses: archiepiscopus Tyrensis; episcopus Tripolitanus; episcopus Sydoniensis; episcopus Beritensis; magistri scolarum; magister Obertus canonicus Antiochenus; and others.

text: Aug. 23. Perugia. Pope Gregory IX rebukes the magistri and brothers of the Knights Templar and Hospital of St John of Jerusalem over the way a dispute between them about certain mills has degenerated into violence, in spite of the efforts of the papal legate, the archbishop of Ravenna, to resolve it. Reminding them of their obligations, he orders them to send suitable procurators to the Holy See by the next passage in March to receive the papal judgement. He has ordered the abbas of the Templum Domini and the abbas of St Samuel to enforce this with excommunication. He also writes in the same terms to the abbas of the Templum Domini and the abbas of St Samuel in Acre.
