Bohemond, magni Boamundi filius, Dei gratia princeps Antiochenus, confirms everything given to the Genoese by his father Bohemond [of Taranto], saving patriarchal jurisdiction [salva iusticia Beati Petri], in Antioch, Portus Sudinum and Latakia. He specifies a ruga in Antioch, running between 2 watercourses, and a funditia; a ruga and a third part of the port revenues in Latakia; and in Suidinum a third part of the port revenues. He promises his protection in law. If he conquers anywhere with Genoese assistance he promises the same rights as in Latakia. Any legal dispute will be settled within 15 days. He exempts the Genoese from the payment of comercium throughout his domain and he extends the privileges of the Genoese to the inhabitants of Savona and Nola. [120] Bohemond III, the son of Prince Raymond, Dei gratia princeps Antiochenus, with the advice of his barones, confirms under seal whatever was granted in the charter of Bohemond I to the Genoese in Antioch, Latakia and portus Sudini. He specifies: a ruiga with the church of St John in Antioch, which is between two streams [aquae] and has the road [via] on each side; a fundicum, a ruga and everything else they have in Latakia, together with a third part of the revenues [redditus] of the port; a third part of the revenues in Suidinum. He promises a response to complaints or justice with 40 days, unless hindered for a good reason; and in that case emendment with 15 days according to the usus et institutiones of his curia. He gives [freedom from] conmertium in all his land and in any territory he acquires with Genoese assistance. He promises security of Genoese persons and possessions. In return for his oath, Lanfrancus Albericus civitatis [Ianue] eiusque totius senatus ac consulum venerabilis legatus swears to aid and defend Bohemond’s subjects [homines] and possessions against all men. At the request of King Richard I of England and in return for the service of Genoa in the siege of Acre and in the recovery of the kingdom of Jerusalem, Guy, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex VIIIus, grants the Genoese, represented by Morinus filius Rodoani de Platea Longa consul de comuni, who with other nobles had fought the Sarraceni in the siege of Acre, confirmation of all the rights they and all those living between Portovenere and Monaco were known to have had in the city of Acre before its conquest. He confirms their right to enter, reside in and leave with all their goods by land or sea without the payment of dues [drictura]. In the presence of dominus Hugo Ferrarius and dominus Hugo Fornarius, [Genoese] consules in terra Syria, Iohannes de Ibelino Beriti dominus modifies under seal the grant he had previously made to the Genoese [Nov. 1-30 1221]. He confirms their freedom from the payment of dues [ius et consuetudo] on all goods they import and export to and from Beirut, although he limits this to those brought and taken out by sea. He now excludes all pottery [excepto omni opere porterie], wine and oil, which will now be subject to measuring and will be charged either at 1 denarius for every 5 iarri Beritenses, or, if the mensurator ville is involved, at 2 denarii for every 5 iarri, and wheat [bladum], which will be charged at 1 denarius for every 2 modii. He confirms the freedom for Genoese ships [vasella], great and small, from the payment of terciaria and ancoragia. He confirms the right of the Genoese to have a free court [curia libera] in Beirut, with the same rights as those enjoyed by their courts in Acre, Tyre and the kingdom of Jerusalem. He confirms their possession of houses that had belonged to Rubaldus Corvus, adding that the Genoese may improve them, and their use of the bath house before the castle of Beirut on Thursday every week. He gives the right to an oven. He repeats that the Genoese in general will not suffer if one of their compatriots commits an act of piracy against Iohannes or his homines and that the goods on Genoese ships wrecked on the coast of the lordship of Beirut will be secure.
