text: Nov. 17. Lateran. Pope Gregory IX rebukes the king and queen of Cyprus. They, and their barones and milites, refuse to pay tithes to the archbishop of Nicosia and his suffragans. They ignore sentences of excommunication imposed on the barones, milites and balivi on account of their failure to pay tithes or their illegitimate marriages. They appoint Greci and Suriani as balivi, ignoring Latins [Latini]. They pledge far-off possessions to the Knights Templar and Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem and other exempt religious, who are absolved from the payment of tithes. The pope orders the king and queen to desist from these practices and make sure that tithes are paid in full.
