text: June 17. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, deans, archdeacons, chapters, other prelates the churches and the rest of the faithful in the Kingdom of England, noting the special importance of the church of Bethlehem because of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, but relating that, while he has learned that it was once built with noble walls, now it has been almost totally destroyed by those ‘who did not know the way of the Lord’. Wishing to have it restored, for the next decade the pope is relaxing one year and forty days of enjoined penance to all those who lend a helping hand to its repair. To increase the temporal and spiritual results of his effort, the pope orders the addressees to admit the nuncios who come to them for this purpose, to allow them to speak words of exhortation to their subjects to support this repair, with the archbishops and bishops granting them letters with fitting indulgences, and, when asked, to invite their subjects to extend the hand of charity for the repair of the church.

Pope Innocent IV writes to the prior of the Holy Trinity of London of the Order of St. Augustine, relating that he was informed on behalf of the bishop-elect of Bethlehem [Gottifredo dei Prefetti] that several questors of the church of Bethlehem collect alms in his name, but they not only fail to turn them over to him, but they even apply them to their own uses, to his and his church’s prejudice. The pope orders the addressee to force with ecclesiastical censure those who keep the alms collected for that church and fail to turn them over to the bishop-elect or his nuncio to restore them, and to force those who dare to take away the goods of that church violently or otherwise keep them illicitly or rashly impede its nuncios sent to England to collect alms to stop this, first warning them, without appeal.

Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem, relating that he was asked on their behalf to provide for them, since they wear closed (clausis) capes over their weapons, which rather hinders their hands and arms, making it easier for their enemies to attack them and depriving them of freedom [of movement] to defend themselves. The pope allows them to wear loose overcoats when they happen to be in or cross through unsafe places, by wearing the sign of the cross on them over their chests (supertunicalibus largis uti, gerendo super eis in pectore signum crucis).
