text: March 18. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the Commune of Marseille (Massiliense), relating that he has great affection for them because of their past and future services. They informed him that, considering the assistance in the acquisition of the Kingdom of Jerusalem (Ierosolimitanum) and Tripoli and in the support of Ascalon (Esqualona) and Jaffa (Ioppa) that he received from the Commune of Marseille (Massiliense) in those days, the late Baldwin (Balduinus) the fourth king of Jerusalem (Ierosolimitanus) granted the commune perpetually the free faculty to enter and leave the kingdom and to buy and sell freely without any exaction, as well as the casale called Ramie along with its peasants and appurtenances, as is more fully contained in his privilege for this. Inclined by their entreaties, the pope confirms and strengthens the concession, inserting the text of the privilege verbatim.

text: March 18. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the Commune of Marseille (Massiliense), relating that he has great affection for them because of their past and future services. They informed him that at one time the consuls of Marseille (Massilienses) in Acre asked the late Iohannes the tenth king of Jerusalem (Ierosolimitanus) for an account concerning the liberty and the street (ruga) granted to them by the king’s predecessors, the kings of Jerusalem. Eventually, after insistence from the consuls, when the king was assured by trustworthy people that the liberty and street were granted to the Commune of Marseille (Massiliense) by his predecessors, he confirmed them with the consent of wife, the late Maria (of Montferrat), as is more fully contained in the privilege made for this. Inclined by their entreaties, despite the incongruous Latin, the pope confirms and strengthens the privilege, inserting it verbatim.

The letter speaks of Robert of Artois’ (Robertus Atrabatensis) impetuous attack on Mansurah, his quarrel with the master of the Templars before the attack and William (Willelmus) Longa-spata’s attempt to mediate. Aware of divisions in the Christian camp the sultan counterattacks and both are killed along with Robertus de Vere.
