text: January 16. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers of the Teutonic Order of Jerusalem, relating that he decided to transfer to the Templars their former [Grand] Master Gerhard von Malberg (Gerardus de Malberch), who could not remain in their order without a serious scandal. Happily relieved of this case, with their ties to the pope and their good name, the Teutonics shall have whatever they can, secure in the faith that the pope loves their order and shall ensure their prosperity in the future.

text: January 16. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers of the Teutonic Order of Jerusalem, relating that they explained before the pope that after their former [Grand] Master Gerhard [von Malberg] resigned in their castle of Montfort, leaving the authentic and perpetual seal of the master on the altar, as is customary, and went from their house to the house of the Templars, he rashly had a new seal made, and the addressees fear lest he should oblige them in any debts. The pope grants that they shall not be held responsible concerning any debts of the former master after his resignation, especially since the new master gave the former master 400 silver marks at the Apostolic See to pay his debts.

Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers of the Teutonic Order of Jerusalem, relating that, although the Templars, Hospitaller and Teutonic Knights do not allow transfers from one order to another for any reason and force those who leave to return to the same house, nevertheless, considering the problematic presence of the former [Grand] Master Gerhard von Malberg (Malberch) in the Teutonic Order, the pope orders his transfer to the Templars, although no other brother shall dare to follow his example in the future.

text: January 24. Lyons. After a diligent examination, Pope Innocent IV writes to the bishop-elect of Bethlehem G[ottifredo] dei Prefetti, relating that he decided to confirm his election to the vacant see, since all the canons who should and could came together on the appointed day and, invoking the Holy Spirit, elected him, then papal chaplain. The chapter informed the pope by sending as their nuncio and agent Canon Bartolomeo [da Roma] – whose faith and diligence the pope praises – to ask that the pope to confirm the election as canonical.

text: January 25. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem and papal legate (Robert de Nantes), relating that the abbot and monks of the Greek monastery of St Margaret of Agros, of the Order of St Basil, in the Nicosia diocese, explained to him in an extensive petition that they frequently suffer serious harassment from certain people from the Nicosia and Limassol dioceses. The pope commands the patriarch not to allow anyone to trouble unduly, and contrary to their privilege of papal protection, the monks’ persons, rights, goods, monastery, and grange of St Mary of ‘Stilo’ on Cape ‘Cavata’, restraining molesters with ecclesiastical censure without appeal. Valid for three years.

text: February 3. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors and other faithful whom this letter will reach, relating that the church of Bethlehem, which is special in general because of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, deserves special attention in these days now that the church and its brothers have lost much of their temporal goods to the enemies of the Christian faith. Since the church and its brothers are forced to beg for help for the expenses occasioned by the reception of paupers, visitors and pilgrims, and for the necessities of the faithful, the pope orders the addressees, when the brothers of that church arrive in their places for collecting alms, to receive them kindly and treat them honourably, allowing them to admonish the people in their churches and freely seek alms, and the addressees shall not prefer their confraternities (confratrias), which they can make on any day of the year, lest the alms for the poor of Christ thereby be lost or the works of piety be impeded. Moreover, whoever supports such a holy brotherhood as a colleague and makes an annual donation will obtain an indulgence of forty days. If for the above purpose any of the brothers come to a city or castle or area under interdict, the addressees are to have the churches opened once a year, expelling excommunicates and those interdicted by name, and have the divine offices celebrated. They are also to have this constitution announced in their parishes with their own letters. If any of the clerics of their churches wish to serve the brothers of that church for a year or two, with the license of the prelate and chapter, they shall not be impeded nor shall they lose their benefices or ecclesiastical incomes in the meantime.
