Writing to Petrus prior and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, Pope Celestine II notes that King Fulk of Jerusalem and Queen Melisende wished to establish a monastery for professed men or women in the church of Sanctus Lazarus at Bethania and were supported in their appeal to the Holy See by Patriarch William of Jerusalem and his hierarchy. Pope Celestine assents to this and confirms the gift to the Holy Sepulchre of the casale of Thecua by King Fulk in exchange for casalia surrendered by the canons to provide a living for the community at St Lazarus.

At the petition of Petrus prior sancti Sepulcri and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, Pope Alexander III renews the privileges granted by his predecessors Popes Honorius II, Innocent II, Celestine II, Lucius II and Eugenius III. The pope also confirms the right of the prior and canons of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate stational Masses at and process to the Templum Domini, the Mt of Olives, Mt Sion and St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat on their feasts, even when the patriarch is absent. They also have the right, in the patriarch’s absence, to excommunicate malefactors in their parishes, especially those who withhold the payment of tithes. None of their goods can be alienated or pledged, except by the common agreement, or that of the wiser part, of the canons; nor can anyone be sent overseas, suspended or expelled, unless his fault is manifest. Confratres can receive communion from the canons and be buried in the canons’ cemeteries unless they are excommunicated. The patriarch cannot extort goods from the canons and confratres. The canons are freed from payment of tithes on noval lands, cultivated by themselves or at their expense, or providing animal fodder. The election of priors by the canons is to be free from interference. The pope renews his protection of the Holy Sepulchre.

At the request of Petrus prior, Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem confirms under seal for him and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre their possession of the church of St Nicholas, built outside the northern walls of the town of Jaffa, in the field of St Nicholas above the sea. The church, under the title of the Passion and Resurrection, was given to the canons by King Amalric. The patriarch confirms its parochial rights of baptism, the churching of women, the absolution of the sick and burial, together with the right to retain the tithes of all its lands and vineyards.
