text: Jan. 13. Lateran. Pope Innocent III informs the patriarch of Jerusalem that he has heard from the patriarch of Alexandria about Christian prisoners in Alexandria. The patriarch of Alexandria has asked him to work for an exchange of prisoners. Innocent orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to facilitate an exchange and to raise subventions for that purpose, persuading the Knights Templar, Hospitallers of St John, kings and princes to assist him.

text: Jul. 25. Segni. Having heard from the patriarch of Jerusalem that the Knights Templar, more from simplicity than malice, have been exacting payment for entry into their Order, Pope Innocent III orders the patriarch to forbid this and to expel any brothers who in future are admitted in this way, but to be tolerant with those who in the past have acted through ignorance. Those in the Order who have been admitted to the subdiaconate, since they engaged in warfare, should be treated in the same way provided they abstain from the spilling of blood.

text: Mar. 15-22. Lateran. Pope Innocent records that the patriarch of Jerusalem has informed him that, after the bishop of Sidon had left the Holy Land for the Holy See, a letter had arrived from the king of Cilician Armenia offering immediate peace with the Knights Templar, humbly begging for absolution from his excommunication and asking for justice in his case and that of his nephew against the count of Tripoli. Meanwhile the count of Tripoli had argued that as he held Antioch from the emperor of Constantinople he was exempt from patriarchal jurisdiction. The pope orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to absolve the king from his excommunication, but to deny him and his nephew justice in their dispute with the count of Tripoli for the time being, because of his grave offences. As for the count of Tripoli, his argument that he is subject to the emperor of Constantinople should be dismissed as frivolous and inane.

text: Jan. 11. Pope Innocent III has heard that the bishop of Acre and his chapter are refusing to give the Genoese church of St Laurence in Acre the oil of chrism it should rightly receive. He orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to ensure that the bishop of Acre issues the chrism.

text: Feb. 20. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem. Believing that Erardus de Brena intended to travel to the Holy Land to marry illegitimately one of the daughters of Henricus comes Campaniae, he had ordered the previous patriarch and the archbishop of Tyre to forbid the marriage. They had done so privately, but not publicly. The pope orders the patriarch to maintain the prohibition, although Erardus has now been seen in France.

Abbot Gervase of Prémontré reminds the patriarch of Jerusalem how on papal orders Frater Hellinus abbas Floreffiae had accompanied the bishop of Acre on his journey to the East and how Hellinus, who had full powers to represent their Order, asked the patriarch to assist the Premonstratensians. Gervase asks the patriarch to bear in mind especially the restoration of the possessions of the Premonstratensians, [the abbeys of] Sanctus Samuel and Sanctus Abacuc, the first being a daughter of Prémontré, the second a daughter of Floreffe. text: Mar. 4. Anagni. Representatives of King John of Jerusalem have explained in the pope’s presence how certain merchants [mercatores] avoided paying dues to the chatena of Acre by intermingling their goods with those carried by privileged clergy. Pope Honorius III orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to enforce an end to this fraudulent behaviour.
