text: Nov. 17. Lateran. Pope Gregory IX rebukes the king and queen of Cyprus. They, and their barones and milites, refuse to pay tithes to the archbishop of Nicosia and his suffragans. They ignore sentences of excommunication imposed on the barones, milites and balivi on account of their failure to pay tithes or their illegitimate marriages. They pledge far-off possessions to the Knights Templar and Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem and other exempt religious, who are absolved from the payment of tithes.
