text: August 8. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem and papal legate (Robert de Nantes) and the bishop of Sidon, relating that, since the noble man Jean of Avesnes asked the pope to declare him legitimate, the noble man Guillaume of Dampierre, who is affected by the matter, has appeared before the pope, intends to produce some witnesses living in those parts (Outremer) to testify against Jean, and asked the pope to have these witnesses admitted in those parts. The pope orders the addressees to admit within nine months the worthy witnesses to be produced by Guillaume or the agent that he sends there for this purpose, concerning the articles that [the cardinal-bishop] of Porto [Ottone da Tonengo] and the cardinal-deacon of S. Cosmas and S. Damian. Gil [Torres] are sending to the addressees enclosed with their seals. Diligently examining the witnesses, the addressees are to send their depositions to the pope enclosed with their seals. If both of them cannot carry this out, then one can do so.

Pope Innocent IV asks the patriarch of Jerusalem and Apostolic Legate [Robert de Nantes] and the bishop of Sidon to calculate the nine months from the time the pope sent the previous letter [8 August 1245, RRR 2509], adding that he does not want the party that first appears in their presence to have to wait more than one month for the other party. If Jean’s party wishes to produce before the addressees witnesses to refute those who were received from Guillaume’s party, the addressees shall receive them within one month and diligently examine them, afterwards sending to the pope their depositions enclosed with their seals. text: August 18. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, [deans, archdeacons, archpriests, provosts and other prelates of churches] in the Kingdoms of Jerusalem and Cyprus and in other provinces of Outremer, ordering them not to hinder the activity of the Friars Minor (Franciscans). Indeed, through the Christendom many prelates envy the poverty of the Franciscans and try to control their settlements, masses, funerals and confessions notwithstanding their religious autonomy. The pope assigns the patriarch of Antioch and the archbishops of Nazareth and Nicosia as conservators to protect the basic privileges of the Franciscans, by using ecclesiastical censure in case of necessity.

text: September 18. Lyons. Pope Innocent IV writes to Master Giovanni da Vercillo, the chaplain of the patriarch of Antioch [Alberto Roberti], relating that Giovanni explained to him that when the patriarch was legate in those parts [Outremer] he conferred on Giovanni the vacant chantry of the church of Tortosa (Tartus), but afterwards the bishop and chapter of Tortosa attempted to confer it on Canon Richard of the same church. The pope accepts the patriarch’s action and, supplying any defect, no statute withstanding, confirms Giovanni’s possession of the chantry with its appurtenances as was held by his predecessor the late Michael, declaring null and void anything done against this collation.
