text: Dec. 9. Bernardus ecclesie Tripolitane episcopus and the canons of his church reach an agreement with Raymundus pater Iherusalem Xenodochii, through the judgement of Pons episcopus Podiensis, abbas S. Felicis de Gerunda and Petrus de Podii Laurentii. Raymundus had shown the bishop charters of gift made by Count Raymond [of St Gilles], and Arbertus episcopus and Pons episcopus, and confirmed in papal bulls of privilege. Bernardus makes an eleemosynary grant, giving Raymundus Hospitalis pater and his brothers the tithes of all the property the Hospitallers own in the diocese of Tripoli, except for half the tithes returned in the parish of Artussia, together with the tithes of the mills of Guillelmus Berardi. The Hospital is to retain the tithes of the bishopric of Archae as long as it has possession of the church there. text: Mar. 27 1138 – Mar. 27 1143. Lateran. Pope Innocent II grants Raymundus magister Iherosolimitani xenodochii and his successors the following privileges. No brother can be moved or retained without permission of the government of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. No one should be hindered from joining the Order. The brothers are encouraged to be obedient to their masters.

text: Dec. 9. Lateran. Pope Celestine II writes to Raimundus magister and the brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Because disputes have arisen, not only in the kingdom of Jerusalem but elsewhere, in relation to a hospital [hospitale] in Jerusalem built to receive German poor pilgrims, the pope subjects this hospital, its prior and those serving in it, to the Hospital of St John.

text: Jan. 25 – Dec. 31. Galterius Cesaree Palestine dominus and his men [homines] had been imprisoned for debt in Acre. To free himself and them, Galterius sells under his seal land with a house and a threshing floor [area] next to the common cistern [at Caco] to Raimundus Jherosolimitani Hospitalis magister for 800 besants. The Hospital will hold the land freed from all servitium. The deal is made in the presence of Balduinus Cesariensis archiepiscopus. Galterius had previously bought the land from Petrus drugemannus de Caco for 200 besants. text: Jan. 1 – Aug. 31. Melisende, dei gratia Ierosolimorum regina, with the agreement of her son Baldwin rex Jerusalem, records that she has made a sealed eleemosynary grant, exchanging property with Raimundus Hospitalis pauperum Christi provisor. The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem has made over to her a bath house in the vicus of St Leonard in Acre. In return Melisende has given a logia before the doors of the basilica of St John the Baptist and houses that had belonged to Franco castellanus Acconensis, which Melisende had claimed and had reverted to the crown. Melisende also adds to the exchange land [terra] on the right side of the road that runs from Acre to Casale Album, belonging to the camerarius. The other three sides of the land are bounded by Casale Album, Disderum and the property of Suriani. Melisende, together with King Baldwin, confirms under seal a purchase made on behalf of the Hospital by the aforesaid Raimundus, tutor pauperum, of a house with a tower adjacent to it, which had belonged to Robertus vicecomes Acconensis. The purchase was legitimately made in the presence of Clarembaldus vicecomes Acconensis, with the agreement of Agnes, the wife of Robertus and the mother of Clarembaldus. Melisende confirms a purchase made by the aforesaid Frater Raimundus for the use of the poor and the hospital [xenodochium] of a casale called Assera from Johannes domnus de Bethsan, although Johannes has retained the rustici. Witnesses of the exchange: Geraldus de Valentia vicecomes, who presided over the exchange; Menardus de Portu; Deauratus and others. Witnesses of the purchase of Assera: Ysaac, dapifer regie curie; Hugo, uncle of Johannes de Bethsan; Thomas and his wife, who had been in possession of the casale and agreed to its sale; Gualterius Caesarie; Eustachius, his son, to whose feudum the casale belonged; Oddo Strabo.

text: May 24. Rotbertus de casali S. Egidii and his wife Odula state that, with the agreement of Rohardus and his wife domina Gilla, from whom they held the feudum, and with the confirmation of King Fulk, Queen Melisende and Patriarch William, they had leased the land [of Emaus] to Raimundus magister and the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, on condition that Raimundus and the Hospitallers gave them 500 besants a year, half payable at Easter and half on the Feast of All Saints, as recorded in charters issued by the king of Jerusalem and the patriarch. But now, in changed circumstances, Raimundus magister and the brothers of his chapter have agreed to a modification of terms requested by Rotbertus and Odula. The rent will in future by paid annually in 3 instalments: 200 besants at Easter, 100 on the Feast of St John the Baptist, 100 on the Feast of All Saints and 100 at Christmas. If the rent is not forthcoming for 40 days Robert and Odula can reoccupy the land until the rent is paid. Their lord Rohardus and his wife Gilla agree as an eleemosynary grant that up to 100 besants can be sold to, exchanged with or given to the Hospital. Should the family of Rotbertus fail and the feudum revert to its lord, the Hospital will be bound solely to pay a rent of 400 besants a year. Pope Eugenius III writes to Raimundus prepositus Ierosolimitani xenodochii, confirming the papal protection extended by his predecessors Paschal II, Calixtus II, Honorius II and Innocent II to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and confirming its possession of properties. Eugenius specifically lists the following in the East: Becciafaba; Belforte; castellum Bouonis; Ramora; Giaffa; Mirabel; Treponti; Benguarnito; Poffavento; Calonthone; Calosia; Caco; obedientia de Cesaria; Altafiad; obedientia de Napoli; Delin; Cafamarda; casale de Monte Nayn; Tabaria; obedientia de Cayfa, de Acri et Gibessa; Cozetto; Syri; Sidon; Beirut; Tripoli; Mont Pèlerin; Arci; Coliat; Rafania with all the dependencies the Hospital has in the county of Tripoli; Stamborgo; the obedientiae of Antioch; Assa and Femia; Bersabee, just as the king and patriarch conceded. The Hospital’s freedom from excommunication and interdict is repeated, as are its burial rights, tithe privileges and the freedom of the brothers to elect their master [provisor atque prepositus].
