text: . December 21. Naples. Pope Alexander IV writes to the abbot and convent of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Valley of Josaphat of the Order of St Benedict, belonging directly to the Roman Church, in the diocese of Jerusalem, relating that it was proposed to him on their behalf that at one time the imminent madness of the pagans and other evil-doers forced them to desert their monastery and to transfer to another place in order avoid danger to their persons, without having been granted the liberty to do so by the papacy. The pope responds to their requests by restoring them and their monastery to their original freedom, allowing them to ask and receive from the Apostolic See confirmation for their abbot, which the pope reserves for that see, and to enjoy freely the exemption and other privileges with the liberties granted to the monastery.

text: January 13. Naples. Pope Alexander IV writes to the suffragans of the church of Nicosia (Nicosiensis), both Greeks and Latins, relating that reason and their pontifical modesty requires that they treat Archbishop [Hugo] of Nicosia (Nicosiensis) with fraternal affection and, along with those subject to his metropolitan rule, revere him. Thus the pope urges them to show the archbishop fitting obedience and reverence as their metropolitan, observe and have observed by their subjects his justly promulgated sentences, and assist him and his church.

text: January 13. Naples. Pope Alexander IV writes to Archbishop [Hugo] of Nicosia (Nicosiensis), urging him as the Lord's watchman to heed the Prophet Ezekiel's warning that, if one sees danger and does not alert the people, their blood will be on one's hands. Although the pope believes that the archbishop is zealous and diligent in looking out for souls and correcting transgressions, since the archbishop will act more eagerly the more the pope encourages him and will feel himself strengthened by papal authority, the pope orders him to be a prudent cultivator and watchman of the Lord's vineyard and to root out the thorns and thistles of vices in his subordinates and plant and propagate virtues in their stead, correcting and reforming as befits his office and as he deems expedient for the salvation of their souls.

text: January 18. Naples. Pope Alexander IV writes to Queen [Placentia] of Cyprus, relating that Archbishop [Hugo] of Nicosia (Nicosiensis) explained to him that at one time a dispute arose between the late King H[enry], his mother [Alix], and the knights of the kingdom, on the one side, and the churches of the kingdom, on the other, over certain tithes and other issues, and that eventually the parties made a pact that the king swore to observe without violation, to have his men observe it, and to expel heretics from the kingdom. Although the archbishop asked her many times, however, the queen refuses to swear to defend him and his church as she should. The pope thus asks the queen to do what she is held to do. Otherwise she should know that the pope will not fail to show justice on these matters to the archbishop and the churches.

text: January 21. Naples. Pope Alexander IV writes to the chapter of Acre (Acconenses), relating that, when their church lacked a pastor, they summoned those who should and could come on the assigned day and elected canonically Florentius, then canon of Laon (Laudinensis), as their bishop. With the chapter’s nuncios sent for this purpose, Florentius came to the Apostolic See and the nuncios asked the previous Pope I[nnocent IV] to confirm the election, which he did in order to avoid a long vacancy. Afterwards the present pope ordered that Florentius be consecrated. The pope therefore orders the chapter to welcome, obey, and revere Florentius as their bishop. The pope sends similar letters to the clergy and to the people of the city and diocese of Acre (Acconenses).
